Facial trauma typically refers to injuries involving the soft and hard tissues of the head other than the brain.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are experts in treating and repairing facial injury and trauma, including fractures of the upper and lower jaws and the orbits surrounding the eyes as well as facial lacerations. Their knowledge of how jaws come together (dental occlusion) is critical when repairing complex facial fractures.

Facial trauma typically refers to injuries involving the soft and hard tissues of the head other than the brain. Our practice is able to help patients with fractures in the frontal bone (forehead), orbitals (eye sockets), cheekbones, nose, as well as the upper and lower jaws. These kinds of problems often occur in tandem with facial lacerations and broken/knocked out teeth, both of which we can correct as well.

Corrective jaw surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal and dental irregularities.

Corrective jaw surgery – also called orthognathic surgery – is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal and dental irregularities, including the misalignment of jaws and teeth. Surgery can improve breathing, chewing and speaking. While the patient’s appearance may be dramatically enhanced as a result of the surgery, orthognathic surgery is performed to correct functional problems.

The following are some of the conditions that may indicate the need for Orthognathic Surgery:

Difficulty chewing or biting food

Difficulty swallowing

Chronic jaw or jaw joint (TMJ) pain and headaches

Excessive wear of the teeth

Open bite (space between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed)

Unbalanced facial appearance from the front or side

Facial injury

Birth defects

Receding lower jaw and chin

Protruding jaw

Inability to make the lips meet without straining

Chronic mouth breathing

Sleep apnea (breathing problems when sleeping, including snoring)

Temporomandibular joint disorders are a family of problems related to your complex jaw joint.

TMJ or the Temporomandibular Joint, is the part of the mandible that hinges the lower jaw to the skull, allowing you to open and close your mouth with flexibility. Some patients tend to clench their jaw and grind their teeth, resulting in severe pain that is associated with their TMJ and the surrounding muscles. Other times, the pain can result from trauma to the jaw or in reaction to recent stress or anxiety. When the TMJ is affected, so is a person’s ability to speak, chew, or smile.

Some signs that your TMJ complex may be under stress:

Stiffness of the jaw muscles

Locking or clicking noise whenever you open and close your mouth

Muscles soreness and pain in the neck and shoulders

Migraines or headaches

An oral surgeon’s expertise is focused on the physiology, skeletal structure and muscle groups of the face.

We commonly associate Botox with plastic surgeons, dermatologists and other skin care experts. But oral surgeons have a distinct advantage in providing this wrinkle-reducing treatment for you. Botox is a service commonly offered by dermatologists or skin specialists to reduce wrinkles. As Oral surgeons, we are in a better position to do a better treatment job with Botox as we have an in-depth understanding of facial structures, muscles, and skeletal structure of the face. Botox is short for botulinum toxin, a protein that is injected into a patient’s facial muscles to treat dental issues and cosmetic related problems. When this protein enters the nerve, it obstructs nerve transmission making it impossible for the injected muscles to contract and thereby halting the growth of wrinkles.

A tooth — YES even a healthy one — may need to be extracted for several reasons.

A tooth —YES even a healthy one — may need to be extracted for several reasons. Decay, injury, or other dental conditions can become so severe that it cannot be saved, and/or the health of the surrounding teeth require its removal. Some healthy teeth require extraction if there is not enough room in the mouth, or one or more teeth may be extracted to prepare for additional orthodontic or oral surgery treatments.

A tooth extraction is the most common procedure at Montville Oral Surgery Associates. Most of the time, local anesthesia is all that is needed during the procedure to keep the patient calm and comfortable. Your personal treatment plan, including your options for anesthesia, will be discussed during your consultation appointment. We look forward to seeing you soon.

A Sinus Lift is a common surgical procedure performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, which allows the sinus floor to be repositioned, creating enough space and bone to properly place dental implants. Various grafting materials and the addition of platelet rich fibrin (PRF) are used to encourage your bone to grow more quickly into the area, helping to stabilize the dental implant.

Sinus augmentation procedures are highly predictable, with studies reporting over 95% success. Following sufficient healing of a sinus augmentation (4-5 months), implants are placed in a predictable and successful manner. If your dentist told you that you were not a candidate for dental implants in the upper back jaw, a sinus lift may be the answer. With our advanced 3D imaging, we will be able to evaluate and determine if a sinus lift can be completed to transform the way you eat and chew.

The second most common teeth to become impacted are the upper canine teeth. Since the canines are quite important for a healthy smile and an aligned bite, an orthodontist will usually recommend treatment to help these teeth properly erupt.

Patients who require dentures often worry about their teeth slipping, becoming loose, or falling out while performing normal activities like talking and eating. Traditional dentures were developed to provide comfort and aesthetic appeal but recently, there has been an increased demand for overdentures as patients feel they are more solid and secure without the risk of slipping or falling out of the mouth. Overdentures are removable dentures that click or snap onto 2-4 dental implants. Because only a limited number of implants are needed, an overdenture can be a very economical way to achieve a sturdy and solid set of teeth. The need for extensive bone grafting may be avoided as well with an overdenture. We look forward to discussing this great option at your consultation.

Anesthesia is an important part of every oral surgery procedure, and thankfully, we have a wide spectrum of choices available to us today. We can block pain, calm your nerves, and even give you a restful sleep while we work through your procedure. Oral surgeons are trained and highly qualified in all types of anesthesia, from local to general anesthesia and everything in between. Our surgical assistants are also certified DAANCE assistants which requires them to complete and pass a rigorous anesthetic course sponsored by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Drs. Lampert, Abrahams, and Pirozzi will answer any questions you may have about any facet of the operation. Commonly, patients describe their feelings during surgery as surprisingly pleasant, without a care in the world!
